The Hunt Begins
In the Ndutu region of Tanzania, this cheetah moved quietly through the brush in hunting mode—alert, focused and constantly watching. For one brief moment, she looked directly my way before returning her attention to the landscape around her.
I love moments like this, when everything seems to slow down and I'm given a glimpse into the rhythm of life in the wild.
SMALL BUT FIERCE - One of my favorite little raptors, this American Kestrel had me following its every move. I was grateful when the little hunter perched close in the golden light, its watchful gaze never wavering.
A BALANCED BREAKFAST — Tiny paws, a slender branch, and berries within easy reach—this little Chipmunk made balancing for breakfast look effortless. I loved watching it savor its snack, perfectly at ease in a perch that would have the rest of us reconsidering the menu.
THE LANDING - I can never get enough of these majestic birds. Wings lifted and talons reaching, this Bald Eagle gave me a powerful yet graceful landing—and a moment I was grateful to witness.
ON SILENT WINGS - My first encounter with Short-eared Owls was worth every minute of waiting in the bitter cold. That silent glide, the stretch of those wings, and those piercing eyes—I was captivated.
THE LOOKOUT — I had been holding my breath, silently wishing this Short-eared Owl would perch and look my way. Then it did. I gasped, lifted my camera, and tried to hold on to that fleeting moment.
WINTER WATCH — Seeing a Snowy Owl among the winter dunes felt like a gift. Some make the journey south from the Arctic, and each encounter reminds me how much their breeding and winter habitats deserve our care.
LINES OF THE WILD — Every Zebra wears a stripe pattern as individual as a fingerprint. This little one paused its grazing just long enough to give me a portrait—and a chance to admire every remarkable line.
FACE TO FACE — Photographed at the Lakota Wolf Preserve in New Jersey, this wolf’s steady gaze offers a close encounter with an animal whose presence is impossible to forget.
